World War II letters

Below are a collection of original letters Don Byers wrote to friends and family while serving with the U.S. Army’s 337th Infantry Regiment of the 85th Division in the Italy during World War II. Some letters tell the story of adjusting to the military life while learning to be a wireman in charge of keeping the lines of communication open between command posts. Other notes detail the preparations for war with intense exercises in North Africa. And later, he describes the harsh realities and emotions soldiers experience.
